Jiang Yanli has been sickly since she was young. Jiang Yanli has been engaged since she was young. She is a romantic, at heart. Growing up, she dreams of one day being the lady of a beautiful golden tower, surrounded by ponds of Koi fish and Lotus flowers. When she gets a little older, she dreams of shooting kites with her future husband, of him bringing her bouquets of peonies, of her shelling lotus pods and hand feeding them to his soft, pretty lips.

He is so strong; in his body and in his convictions, in his words which he tries to be sparing with, but often his passion gets the better of him. She can see why he wouldn't want her. Someone sickly, someone weak. Someone he didn't choose and does not love.

She tries to hide the petals from her brothers, her dearest, dumbest brothers. But one day the dam breaks. He makes it clear he does not want her at Cloud Recesses. He is speaking to his friends, but he does not need to speak as though she and the other girls are not in the room! She starts crying quietly, but soon gives a hacking sob and a pale white petal falls to the floor. Jiang Cheng lunges towards her beloved, but Wei Wuxian gets there first. The other girls crowd around her, to shelter her so hopefully not too many people see, they gently lead her out of the room.

Her father is called. Once he knows, he quickly breaks off the engagement. If this is what comes of it, he would rather see his daughter happily wed to a local fisherman than pine after some spoiled prince. As long as she gets well. As long as she is happy. Anything for his A-li.

Will it help? Can she love another after so long spent moulding herself into the future Jin Furen? Or will she get worse, turning as pale as the petals she coughs up, peonies growing above her early grave?
